Special editions: Love ’em or hate ’em?

The thing about special editions is that they generally always have these perfectly gorgeous covers, or they have special “bonus material” like personal touches from the author that just enhances the reader experience and is absolutely amazing–but it also means they cost a heck of a lot of money! For an indie author who subsists solely on their writing I might consider it, because then I know that the purchase is more like an investment: they’ve put so much of their own effort, time, and sometimes money into a book, commissioning artwork and the like, so my buying it provides them with some income back. For any regular book, like ones that are traditionally published, mainstream, or classic, I’d sooner buy (for myself) just the regular version as opposed to the special edition. Special editions do work well as gifts, though!

Special editions tend to have extra content and more beautiful covers. They also tend to be more expensive. I’d love to have more in my collection as they look great on my bookshelves but I wouldn’t go out and buy a special edition if I already own the regular edition of the same book. I would consider getting the special edition as a gift for someone though.

Brews + Books 
I love special editions, but I would only buy those from books I already love, special editions which are on discount or covers which are just breath-taking.

I have not ever been able to afford… or rather justify the expense for Special Editions. I agree though they always have tremendous cover art. Unless they are a move then you get stuck with the movie art and sometimes that’s blech
