Reading Challenges

Ready, Set, READ!

Literature, Library, Page, Knowledge, Education

The bane of any bookworm’s life is, of course, what I like to call Mount TBR. That dreaded mountain of unread books that just keeps and keeps on growing… If left unchecked, Mt. TBR will take over your living room. Your house. Your life.

Recently, the bookshelves I lovingly put up at the start of the year to display my (unread) treasures collapsed. Yep, I literally have too many books for my shelves. I knew this day was coming – I mean, I’ve been stuffing more and more books behind the neat lines of books already on the shelves for months. Plus, my self imposed book buying ban only lasted about 3 months.

So, the time has come. I have to take action. I must conquer Mt. TBR. Or at least, reduce it enough that it actually fits on the shelves that I am eventually going to fix.

The best way to do it? Yep! Challenge time! After a quick browse through the list of challenges on the Nothing But Reading Challenges Goodreads group (the place to go for reading challenges of all shapes and sizes!), I found just the thing!

Cleaning Out the TBR Closet

This challenge was created by Karen, and it’s pretty straight forward!
1. Sort your “to read” shelf by date.
2. Pick the books that you are going to read which have been on your list the longest and set yourself a goal. You may decide to read all of your books from the oldest year, or you may just take the oldest 20, or 50, or 5 books on your list. Completely up to you how you set your goal and how many books you read!

Since I’m specifically trying to reduce my physical TBR mountain (yes, I really am well beyond ‘pile’, I’m afraid) I’m going to sort two shelves at once: my owned shelf and my to read shelf, and I’ll be tackling all the books I’ve added in 2016 (plus two in 2014).

Here’s my List!

Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1)

Feed (Newsflesh Trilogy, #1)

Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1)

A Court of Thorns and Roses (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #1)

A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #2)

A Court of Wings and Ruin (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3)

Just Like Fate

The Little Prince & Letter to a Hostage

Red Queen (Red Queen, #1)

V Is for Vengeance (Kinsey Millhone #22)

W is for Wasted

Play to Kill

Off the Grid (Monkeewrench, #6)

Cold Kill

Snow White: A Graphic Novel

With my NetGalley and PopSugar challenges going on too (I love a challenge, apparently) I’m not sure how many I’ll get through until the end of the year, but I’ll keep you posted!

How about you? Is your TBR getting out of control? Fancy a challenge? Join me and tell me in the comments what you’ll be tackling these next six months!

Tania xoxo

    1. Hahaha I have yet to meet a Bookworm who’s TBR is not out of control! We need help!!!! When I decided to do the Popsugar challenge this year, I made a deal with myself to try and use as many physical books I already own to fill prompts… And that’s kind of helped, but then my shelves collapsed, and now I feel like I need to try harder! And buy less books! Or maybe get better at putting up shelves…?

      1. Hmmm… I think you’re onto something. Maybe my book buying is not the problem, maybe it’s the walls!!

  1. This seems like the kind of challenge I need in my life!
I have around fifty unread books on my shelves at the moment, and I keep buying more, or receiving more as gifts, and it’s bordering on terrifying now! I stood them all on top of one another towards the end of last year, and the pile was taller than me then… so I dread to think what it looks like now.
Definitely time to get it all under control!

    1. I have books currently piled up around my entire living room and it’s stressing me out! Why do we do this to ourselves?? I’m chuffed I found this challenge, because I think without some kind of structure I’ll never get anywhere!! I like the idea of tackling your oldest books first… If this works, maybe next year I’ll try to read all the books I bought in 2017! Eventually I’ll catch up, right???

Let me know if you decide to do something similar, and how you’re progressing… I most definitely need motivation!
